incredibly fantasitc AGAIN !!!!! October 24, 2009 T. kurelek (Toronto,on Canada) certain periods of my life mini life crisis u2 comes through for me when every thing else in this world is a failure. only 3 tracks donot like. even better since that makes me like u2 even more to show that they are not gods they are human. the producers daniel lanios and brian eno come through as usual like all other great u2 works of art. thanks again u2 for helping through a very rough period in my life, the loss of my mother!! congradulations u2 for another highly successful tour!!! those 4 guys are something else. on equal level with the beatles and pink floyd in creating great legendary albums!!!
U2 - 'No Line On The Horizon' (Interscope) September 27, 2009 Mike Reed (USA) This latest offering by U2 really caught me off guard (that's an understatement). For starters, electronic icon Brian Eno not ONLY had a hand in the production of 'No Line On The Horizon', but he also guests as synthesizer player as well. Has it really been almost thirty years since this Irish supergroup walk onto the scene? I should know because I remember when they toured the states and played small venues on their 'Boy' tour for like a $1 per ticket - this really happened. Tracks that'll have you keeping this CD in your home entertainment system for awhile are "Magnificent", "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Cry Tonight", the catchy "Get on Your Boots", "Stand Up Comedy" and the awesome "Breathe" {a modern day U2 classic}. An absolute must-have.
U2 Become 1 August 13, 2009 gnagfloW (Rosa Barks) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After being the undisputed main rock act in the world late 80s/early 90s U2 somewhat lost the plot. Pop was a disaster, influenced by the sound of Prodigy (of all groups) and the then current techno meets rock trend. All That You Can Leave Behind was a step towards the right direction but despite some great songs the album was still uneven. How to Build an Atomic Bomb was similar but yet less gratifying, a few superb songs but too many bland songs gave one the feeling that U2 were drifting into a becoming a singles band, something that has occurred to many groups in the past.
Maybe even more worrisome, U2 seemed to be putting a more emphasis on the past with re-issues and compilations, some basically milking long die hard fans, like me.
Expectations of No Line on the Horizon were thus subdued. Hearing the lead off single, Get on Your Boots, certainly didn't promise a reverse in such a trend, expect now the question became; can U2 no longer even provide fantastic singles. The song is a bit clunky and by no means radio friendly.
What struck me during the first listen was the coherent feel of the songs. By the time Unknown Caller (track 4) was half way through, I sensed for the first time in ages that this was an U2 album as a group as opposed to Bono and the rest of the bunch. This is before even the surely stadium favorite I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight reveals itself, followed by Boots, which is about as good an album track as it is a lousy single.
As usual among U2 albums, the latter part is slower and more reflective. FEZ-Being Born is my favorite among those songs but unlike most U2 albums, none of the closing songs can be considered filler tunes (unusual for even the better U2 albums), they are all good, White as Snow and Breathe also being outstanding.
Unlike previous U2 albums, this album lacks, however, pure singles. Magnificent is the obvious choice as a single but for some reason that song went nowhere when released (an excruciating boring video certainly didn't help). NLOTH is, however, a very solid set. Although the sound is very much U2, not as experimental as had been suggested prior to its release, it yet differs from their albums in recent years. If it were to be compared to their back catalogue, The Unforgettable Fire comes mainly to mind, with a Moroccan flavor added.
Those who have yet to buy this album due to the lack of popular singles and/or uneven recent releases should give this album a try. This is not another Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby but it is their finest work in at least a decade, on the U2 scale being at 8. NLOTH is a grower and proves that U2 have again Become 1.
Magnificent Anthemic Album! April 26, 2009 Martin A Hogan (San Francisco, CA. (Hercules)) U2's twelfth album brings this Irish phenomenon into a more complex and mature state in years. Its no wonder they took over David Letterman's show for a week as the only musical guest. With lots of welcome help from Brian Eno (ambience and edge) and Danny Lanois (unique guitar work), the band forges ahead on every track with a driving force that sucks you in.
Every cut is fantastic, but some standouts must be mentioned. "No Line On The Horizon" drives full throttle with The Edge creating a echo-like quality to his guitar and Adam Clayton leading with an even and forceful rhythm. "Magnificent" carries forth with several combinations of simple but effective riffs and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton bounce that beat along with Bono giving one of the more inventive vocals on the album. In fact, "Magnificent" is almost anthemic in its force. You can hear Eno's eerie ambient contribution on "Moment of Surrender" and that mood is carried throughout with Bono declaring, "I've been in every black hole" backed with a magical keyboard. "Get On Your Boots" is an excellent hard rocker with U2 going at it with hints of songs past. "FEZ-Being Born" and "White as Snow" show a strong influence by Brian Eno right from the start and U2 takes it and runs with it. In fact, Eno's signature is on every track. Finally, "Cedars of Lebanon" is a fine finishing track with clever percussion mixed with a quietly moody guitar and Bono spilling forth with some dark lyrics.
Released in five different packages, this is one of U2's greatest compliments and it will be interesting to see how many hits will end up being released. Every track is that good.
Incredible depth March 27, 2009 Paul A. Pettipas (Prince Edward Island, Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been a U2 fan since the mid-80's. Most albums are good, some are great, a few are duds. Eno and Lanois participated fully in the writing of these songs and certainly got the best out of the boys in this album. I was not initially struck by the sound at first listen. The causal U2 fan who only gives this album only a listen or two may not ever learn to really appreciate what they did here. Perhaps a bit ahead of its time, seeing as they experimented and tried some new sounds and textures, but I like the fact this band never rests on its laurels and simply repeat past formulas. They always challenge themselves as musicians and their audience. Sometimes, as in Zooropa, they miss....but not here.
This is definitely an album you really need to listen to. Really listen. There is alot of depth, range and richness in the music that if you merely skim over it, you'll miss it completely. Some chords on some of the songs are absolutely wonderful. Fez-Being Born, one of my personal favourites, has a heavy Eno influence and sounds like it came right out of the Unforgettable Fire sessions. Boots should be an incredible live song. Overall its not an easily digestable set of songs, that is true, but it proves to be very fulfilling if you take your time and chew sloooowly. This album will hold up well I believe over time and should be well received and appreciated by hardcore U2 fans, rather than the casual ones.
If you have followed U2 for awhile, you owe it to yourself to pick this album up.
