From Amazon.com Life in New York City, apparently, ain't what it used to be. In director Dan Ireland's "slice of life," Vincent D'Onofrio is a former porn star named Valentino (how's that for subtle metaphor?) who is slowly dying of AIDS. That's the least of your worries. He's also one third of a symbiotic ménage à trois that includes waitress girlfriend Mary Carmen (an obnoxious Salma Hayek) and fetishistic gigolo boyfriend Gary (Thomas Jane, strutting like Madonna on valium). The movie comes across like some Midwestern housewife's salacious idea of what life is like "on the edge"--teeming with drugs, wild dancing, and drag queens. There's even a deaf, transgendered, Patsy Cline-wannabe who, no kidding, gets hit by a car while trying to call for an ambulance. Ireland and screenwriter James Still make such an embarrassing show of being outrageous that it's almost offensive; everybody is so busy being dangerously fabulous that nobody is even remotely human. --Steve Wiecking

SLIGHTLY ODD & THAT MAKES IT GREAT June 14, 2003 It's not your run of the mill movie with tons of special effects and no story line. This movie has a story, and if you can get past the oddness of it a very touching one. Good performances, cheers to Vincent D-Onofrio. This man is not afraid of any movie role that comes his way, and if you watch this movie you'll see what I mean. He tackled this role all the way!
Recomendable. Para ver abrazado a tu pareja.
As bad as it gets. October 5, 2002 This movie missed the theaters and went straight to video, and even this fate is too good for it. The acting is terrible, the characterizations are not credible, and the plot developments--the few that there are--- are dull. Selma Hayek plays an absurdly stereotypical "NYC foul-mouthed Latin Chick," the sort of role that used to be pushed on Rosie Perez. This picture pretends to treat homo and hetero relationships evenhandedly, but the homo component is really a bit of "spice" put in to underscore how far out of the mainstream these characters are. The hetero relationship is the only one that is explored in any depth, and that depth is minimal.
Love in All Shapes and Sexes July 26, 2001 azindn (Arizona, USA) A film of unusual teanderness that explores human love and fragility in all forms is The Velocity of Gary. The complex menage of Valentino (Vincent D'Onofrio), Gary2 (Thomas Jane), and Salma Hayek are a complex trio whose devotion to one another is never a smooth relationship. Valentino is dying of AIDS and his lovers fight over how he should be cared for is a lesson in life and letting go. This is a complex little film which stages its story against the backdrop of gay subculture and NYC porn. It's not a film for everyone, but it is a wonderful love story that presents the tenderness and longing for love and companionship with respect.Thomas Jane is superb as a young man whose emotions are bottled up until he meets and loves Valentino, a gay porn star. Salma Hayek is the volitile lover of Valentino, a spontaneous beauty whose lusty attack on life scares and irritates Gary. How these three come to terms with death and life is a wonderful story for viewers with open minds. ... This is a touching film for anyone who enjoys love stories and fabulous acting. The physical beauty of this cast is stunning and the performances top notch.
Confusing, didnt develop well. April 19, 2001 U2pop (Atlanta) The Velocity of Gary didn't develop well at all. I was confused for the first half of the movie as things were being thrown together. I didn't connect with the movie. It isn't until Vincent D'Onofrio begins to die of AIDS does the characters really come out. The acting in the beginning wasn't too good, it's as though they shot the first part when the actors were young, then let them go off and become really good, and then shoot the second half. Mary Carmen comes across as not believeable sometimes but she does put on a good performance. Vincent D'Onofrio seems a bit fake, almost flaky and its as though Thomas Jane isn't even in the movie. It's okay to watch when your with a bunch of friends and you have someone to chat about it with (yeah yeah talking during the movie) but alone you might get lost.
