4 out of 5 stars films   September 6, 2010
rollerball
I received updates of order confirmation and dispatch of order within a day of ordering which was very helpful.
The film was very good although being a fan of Denzil Washington did help!

3 out of 5 stars mad max revisited   September 1, 2010
Paul James Treslove (London)
The score is the first thing I noted - very good - good start. Our hero doesn't say much for the first half - he has an almost Clint Eastwoodesque aura about him. He can shoot things with pistols and shotguns far further and accurately than any mere mortal. That is acceptable until he enters into any kind of extensive dialogue (ie more than 3 syllables). He is much more likable when he says less. It just suits his character better. The co star I haven't seen before and this must be one of her first major roles (and it shows) - but I could be wrong. The photography, plot are good and the music Ive already mentioned. The film is reminiscent of Mad Max - plenty of bloody brawls with repugnant outlaws are the order of the day. Gary Oldman does a good job of being a bad guy but no more than good. The idea of the plot is appealing, almost biblical as the main good guy (Denzel Washington)takes on the challenge of delivering his holy parcel and in the process experiencing his version of 40 days and nights in one night but this analogy is far too infrequent. A good film that is worth watching but it is not a classic - holywood reared its ugly 'play to the audience' head just a tad too many times.

4 out of 5 stars The Book of Eli   September 1, 2010
Spider Monkey (UK)
`The Book Of Eli' explores one idea of what life could be like in a post nuclear war world. Here food, water, energy and books are hard to come by and every day is a struggle to survive. Eli (played by Washington) is known as a walker, who travels across the country (rather than living in a community) trying to subsist on meagre provisions and fighting off lawless robbers just to get by. He only goes into the communities (one of which that is run by the iron handed Gary Oldman) when he needs to recharge batteries or get extra water. He protects a sacred book which is highly sought after by other unscrupulous people and constantly moves west so that he can share his treasure with someone who may know how to do more good with it.

This film had a bleak feel to it at first, with muted colours and lots of ash, but it soon began to feel like a cross between a Mad Max film, a martial arts/action film (due to Washington's `kick ass' character who is more than capable of looking after himself against some rather unsavoury specimens) and a religious allegory about mans folly's and humanity. This was reminiscent of `The Road' which I saw recently and which is based along similar themes, but I found this films story to be more engaging and more uplifting at the end and much prefer it over the aforementioned film. The acting is pretty decent from all involved and Oldman plays his sneering bad guy role perfectly yet again. There is a good twist in the tale and some issues are raised about mans behaviour without moralising or preaching. Some people seem to dislike this film due to it's religious overtones, but to be honest these are pretty slight and are relevant to the story. All in all this was an enjoyable film and if `The Road' put you off post apocalyptic films, but the premise still intrigues you, then this is well worth a viewing.

3 out of 5 stars bang on three star film   August 31, 2010
J. Scrivener (Birmingham, UK)
The issue with the film is the lack of pace and unexciting twist. the low key performances made the film for me, and I liked the story, good idea, I think they could done more with it though. Explored the idea of the world without the bible, etc and why it was destroyed in the first place. Perhaps a lack of context given to the wider storyline of a desolate world, often film makers think this adds to the low key suspense, but i'm not 100% convinced.

Overall disappointing, a lot more coud of happened for me.

Dogfish1902
Good film, with excellent effects. The only thing that let it down in my opinion was the ending which I thought was a little weak.
