5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening tale for children; watch out for upsetting scenes   December 31, 2008

Set at the height of WW2, this story of a young evacuee who is sent to the countryside from London is as heart-warming as it is shocking. Although based on the popular novel, this movie incarnation doesn't disappoint in highlighting many of the common issues of the time. The acting is fabulous - though one or two people have suggested it's not up to scratch. I'm inclined to disagree; the differences in society back in the late 30's/early 40's are produced perfectly, as are very close communities, lots of discipline, and focus on spirit rather than self pleasure.
The film does have some quite upsetting moments when William is beaten by his sick mother, so I would just skip these moments if young kids are watching. From an adult perspective however, I think the scene is a perfect example of how religion and being lonesome could take people off the rails.

All in all, an excellent film without modern elements!

5 out of 5 stars A classic!   December 6, 2008
Beautifully produced, this film is a touching tale of a young boy who is evacuated to the country during WW2.

Brilliantly acted, this film will take your emotions on a rollercoaster ride - sometimes funny, sometimes sad - but always entertaining, which never lets up. This is a film to be watched over and over - a classic!

Be warned - have some tissues handy - especially for the ending!

Good night Mister Tom my review

I would like to recommend, Goodnight Mister Tom because it's a very emotional story.
When I watched the DVD it was a thoroughly enjoyable and a good range of specialist language.
Based on the World War 2 time.

The charters are Tom, Willie, Zach, Sammy the dog, Mum and mrshartridge. Willie meets a boy called Zach but sadly Zach died because a Germans bomb. Willie's mum died because she drowned her, she was a mental women.

This DVD made you feel that you were there. Mister Tom helps Willie by buying him a book and pen. Willie was getting hit by his mum, for doing absolutely nothing.

My best part of the DVD was when Willie learned to ride a bike.

3 out of 5 stars Goodnight Mister Tom - Disturbing content   September 30, 2008

Whilst it may seem a charming story about a relationship forged between a young evacuee and a grumpy old man, beware. The DVD contains images of abuse and neglect which can be very upsetting to young viewers. My grand-daughter aged 7 was very disturbed by it. So much so that her school have since withdrawn it from their curriculum on the impact the second world war had on children at that time. I would advise parents of young children to preview it first and only then decide whether they think it is appropriate viewing for their children.

This film truley is amazing, i love how Tom starts out seemingly old and grumpy but this young boy turns him in to a big softie really :P . I also feel for Willam when he turns up at Toms doorstep you really see the fear in his eyes of being left with and old scary man whos like a giant, its shows how so many evacuated children must have when they were really just left in the middle of nowhere with strangers, you see Willam and Tom blossom John Thaw is at his best and really makes the character shine through also the young actor who plays william does an amazing job watch this film its amazing ( also willams mother is Monica out of Shameless :))
