Mac Users - Hell to the Yeah! May 16, 2010 El Steve (Long Beach, CA 90814) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have two very old Mac computers. My iMac is over 7 years old, and my iBook is almost 5-6 years old. Both of the DVD drives on them failed. The iBook drive lasted maybe 2 years, and I always thought I'd have to take it in and have the drive replaced. I took a chance, spent fifty bucks on this drive and hoped that it could play DVD's and write music CD's if possible. It came with the drive, a USB cord, and a CD to install the drivers.
I took it out of the package, plugged it into my iBook and just hoped it would work. It didn't. Or at least....I thought it didn't. What I noticed is that the cord to connect the drive to my computer had two USB plugs, so I put both of them into my computer, and bam! It worked perfectly. I had a DVD in the drive and the DVD player automatically booted up and I was watching a movie on my computer....something I haven't been able to do in years. This drive saved me hundreds of dollars in either replacing the internal drive....or buying myself a new laptop! Thank you!
I also used it on my iMac as well with the same results. NO need to install software. The computer did it for me. thank you Samsung! :)
Great portable DVD Burner well April 22, 2010 Gregory Brown (Winter Park, Fl) The Samsung DVD Writer is a reliable, but a bit slow at 8X DVD Burner speed. I was impressed that Samsung gave me the free upgrade to Roxio 9 that is compatible with Windows 7. The Roxio version it comes with does not play DVDs in Windows 7, but works fine in Windows XP.
The DVD is automatically recognized on any system so installing additional software is not a problem. Overall, it's a great DVD Burner at any price.
Don't believe the hype April 8, 2010 Michael L. Smiley Sr. (hanford, cal) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Lasted less than a month. Computer says it's there, it does not recognize any dvd's including it's own install cd-rom. Samsung does not even list it on it's own website, so there is no support. No samsung products for me.
Does the job. February 22, 2010 W (Kaneohe, HI United States) This external DVD drive does the job adequately. I have had no issues with it during the 7 months that I've owned it.
What were they thinking????? February 11, 2010 Ronald K. Goodenow (Northboro, MA USA) Ok, the burner works very well with my little ASUS 900HE. Plug it in a couple of USB ports and off it goes. Nice product. I keep my netbook in the basement on my home network as a backup to my main system and so the drive is useful and welcome, and at a great price.
HOWEVER, the bundled Nero software is garbage. Junk. It took me over 90 minutes to load just the burning software and then when done it wouldn't run, reporting a missing .dll. I went on the web and found a freeware burning program and had it working perfectly in five minutes. It's quick and clean, even with my tiny netbook. What with cheap flash drives it is probably less important to have a stand alone optical drive than ever, and I have another portable drive attached to my main computer which can be easily plugged into the netbook. This said, it never hurts to have a back up to read all those archived files and photos that have ended up on discs in the basement over the years and I say this is a very good product. But why buggy software on a disc as slow as molasses is beyond me.
