5 out of 5 stars great product!   January 5, 2009

I have a bunch of VHS tapes and bought this product in order to transfer them to DVDs. And it does the job well. I was using EyeTV to transfer the tapes to computer files, then burn DVDs with them, but using the VRD-MC5 is much easier. The manual didn't say that you could record 1hour with HQ mode, 2hours with SP, and 6hours with SLP and I had to go through some FAQs at Sony web site to find out and it was frustrating, but everything works fine. I'll be playing with this more with AVCHD video files.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT AND VERY EASY   January 5, 2009

I have a Sony 120 GB HD Camera and we have been watching our footage from the camera with the HDMI cable. This thing is so easy to use. I select the format I want to record (AVCHD) and then select the segments I want to put on the DVD. It keeps track of the DVD that will be needed. I select just enough to get 1 DVD full. Hit record and it does the job and out comes the complete DVD. In my opinion it is fast and easy.

Bought this a week ago on sale at Best Buy. I have a Sharp camera that is seven years old and uses 8mm film. I hooked up the camera to the recorder and everything was a snap. The set up is easy, everything worked right off the bat. I like how it creates chapters at whatever time interval you set, in increments of five minutes up to 20 or 25 minutes. You can also stop the recording and it will make "titles", which are the chapters on the opening dvd menu. After finalizing the dvd I tried it in multiple dvd players and it worked everywhere. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this purchase. I've wanted to transfer my tapes to dvd for a long time and this is the thing to do it with.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and easy device!   December 31, 2008

I've wanted to have the ability to burn DVDs for a while now. The problem is that my PC is now 7 years old, and the processor is way too slow for a decent DVD burner. It works very well, however, and I can't justify spending the money on a new PC yet, just to have the ability to make DVDs. Then I heard about this cool little device...

I had researched the Sony DVR-MC5 as much as humanly possible, including reading a few hundred user reviews on various websites. To be honest, the negative reviews worried me a bit. But finally I decided that it sounded too cool not to buy, and I took the advice of the many who gave positive reviews to this product. I got it about a week ago, and I've been quite busy with it ever since. Needless to say, I had to try out all of the functionality that it advertises. My results have been flawless!

I have been able to record DVDs from;
- both my VCRs *
- my DVD players *
- my old JVC camcorder
- my new Sony camcorder, from both memory stick and mini-DVDs
- my SD card from my digital camera **

* = except if there is "copy protection" on the VHS or DVD
** = creating a photo slideshow

Like I said, I have had absolutely NO problems with this at all! It is so intuitive, I haven't needed to consult the manual for most of the operations! The DVDs I have recorded have worked on all of my DVD players, including the little portable model for the car, without a hitch. I've read that some folks have had issues with this - I used Sony DVD-R discs, and no problems!

The slideshow feature is pretty cool, I must say. Having the ability to put your own MP3 music in the background is a nice touch, too. This is something I will be messing with a lot more in the near future.

So here is my analysis;

PROs - it burns DVDs from any source I want, without a problem. This rocks!

CONs - none, really. I don't need an interface with my PC, which is why I bought this in the first place. It might be nice if there was an audio output when you are watching what is being burned onto the DVD, but that isn't really necessary.

SUMMARY - this is a great DVD burner! It works well, is extremely easy to use, and is well worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars Help save your memory's on Dvd   December 27, 2008
Gioacchino Baio (Brooklyn New York)
The Sony VRDMC5 DvDirect DVD RECORDER IS A GREAT TOOL, TO BRING ALL YOUR OLD VHS tape's to dvd.
Was easy to use, after reading the booklet; The only trouble I came across was that 4 of my Video 8 tape's were kind of old, and the signal to the dvdirect was lost and could not get it to Dvd.
I could see the movie on my video camera but the Dvdirect could not get the signal because the tape was old.
Hope Sony fix's this, so old tapes even if they have a bad signal, can be rescued.
So make sure you copy all your tapes before they get too old.
Now I can watch all my movies on my Dvd player, without pulling out the video camera, and my movies are good for
many years to come.
